H.E Hon. Khadija Met with Nick Dyer UK’s first Special Envoy for Famine Prevention and Humanitarian Affairs

On 17thDec, The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Hon. Khadija Mohamed Diriye today received the UK’s first Special Envoy for Famine Prevention and Humanitarian Affairs, Nick Dyer to discuss further Humanitarian and Development co-operation between Somalia and the UK.

During the meeting, the tasks of the Special Envoy for Famine Prevention and Humanitarian Affairs were discussed, as part of the UK’s interest in addressing the increasing risks of food insecurity and the projected and predicted famine conditions in Somalia and the mechanisms of cooperation with the Somali government in this aspect.

The Minister Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management briefed the delegation on the humanitarian situation in Somalia, particularly the recent cyclone off the coast of Somalia.

The meeting touched on the humanitarian priorities that are required to be supported in Somalia, coordination and cooperation mechanisms to mobilize resources and international support for Somalia to deal with the triple threat that the Somalia is facing at the moment, in addition to improving humanitarian access.

The British envoy said his government would do everything in its power to help the people of Somalia affected by the cyclone.

Nick Dyer said: “The United Kingdom and the Somali government are taking early action and working together to fight and prevent famine and protect the poorest people from the devastating consequences of conflict and climate change.”

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Hon, Khadija Mohamed Diriye affirmed that any further fragmentation and lack cooperation between Somalia and donor countries will contribute to doubling the existing humanitarian catastrophe, which requires the urgent mobilization of international resources to support the government’s program in this aspect.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry and members of the delegation led by the High Representative of the United Kingdom.
