Humanitarian mission in Hiiraan region

On 12th July 2017, the National Humanitarian coordination Centre and the Drought Operations Coordination Centre had conducted a joint mission in Beledwayne, the capital of the Hiiraan province. The mission was for one day and was broken down into two meetings held at the regional governor’s office. The first meeting, chaired by the regional governor, Omar Adan Badiyow, briefed the mission on the humanitarian situation and highlighted the regional administration priorities.

It was attended by Hiiraan regional authorities, the Mayor of Beledwayne, district representatives, representatives of regional departments, humanitarian affairs, women and human rights. The second meeting, co-‐chaired by the director of the National Humanitarian Coordination Centre, Ridwan Abdi, and the Inter-‐Cluster Coordination Group (ICCG) coordinator built on the first meeting and sought to come up with solutions for challenges faced by the regional ICCG. The general findings and recommendations from the two meetings include:

  • More humanitarian support is still needed as the failed “Gu’” rain has not made the situation better, on the other hand, “Deyr” rain and harvesting will start late December, therefore the response must continue before the situation gets worse.
  • The regional government and humanitarian partners have identified three key districts including Beledwayne, Matabaan and Jalalaqsi are the most in needs. Immediate interventions are required that include food, health, shelter, WASH and protection.
