National Inter-Sectoral Meeting: Discussing the current humanitarian situation

On 23rd August, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management (MoHADM) hosted the first National Inter-­‐Sectoral Meeting at its office in Mogadishu. More than 20 individuals gathered from MoHADM, other Federal line Ministries, National Inter-­‐sectoral coordinators. The forum discussed operational issues around the coordination and delivery of humanitarian assistance with the objective of collectively coming up with solutions to challenges.

The meeting is chaired by Mr. Ridwan Abdi, Director of National Humanitarian Coordination Centre (NHCC). Mr. Ridwan updated the participants on the general humanitarian situation in Somalia and he briefly went through key highlights around the country including:

In Lower-Shabelle, there were reports of forced IDPs coming in IDP settlements in KM50, Afgoye corridor and KM13. Reports indicate these IDPs are desperate and have no and or very limited humanitarian services including food, shelter, health and nutrition. In Galmudug State, due to conflict and drought, there is a great displacement and IDPs numbers in Galgadud region is on the rise.

It has been reported that the food security, nutrition as well as health situation of the IDPS are critical; therefore the regional state suggests urgent wet feeding assistance in IDP centres. HirShabelle State, access continues to deteriorate and there is limited humanitarian services in HirShabelle region, the main reason of issues is security, dollarization and dumping the Somali Shillings in Beledweyne city. Puntland State, according to the Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Agency (HADMA) the Gu’ rains were poor and below normal in the most districts. HADMA also highlighted mass loss of livestock to the level of 70-­‐80%. At the end, the meeting was concluded by action-­‐ points that National Sectors Coordinators request is for its members to respond the recent conflict and drought induced IDPs in the outskirts of Mogadishu including KM50 and KM13.
